They played "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger earlier, and you know I loved this song when it came out. It's only in the past few years that I learned it was apparently written about the guy's sister, and how he didn't want her to have sex. Sketchy sibling dynamics! My love, it is explained!

I posted a story last night!

Paul Newman and a Ride Home
Supernatural; Dean; g; 2,365 words
Five books Dean Winchester has read more than once.

I jokingly asked [info]amberlynne if I had to warn for spoilers for the books involved (The Runaway Bunny, Little Women, The Outsiders, and To Kill a Mockingbird), but I do think the story works better if you're familiar with the books, because it's more about their individual impact on Dean than it is about just love of books or reading in general, which I don't think is necessarily Dean's thing.

I was a little worried that, like the mixtape story, the story would end up more about me and books than it is about Dean and books, because I love all four of those books madly, but I think it worked out pretty well.

I am going to ramble on extensively now about this. Flee, if that does not interest you. otherwise, click the cut tag. )

The story makes me happy, which I guess is the whole point, and it seems to be making other people happy (well, in that way that they tell me they're crying, so, you know, score!). Thank you for the lovely comments, btw. I truly appreciate them and will get to answering them soonish.

We need leaders once again who can tap into that special blend of American confidence and optimism that has enabled generations before us to meet our toughest challenges, leaders who can help us show ourselves and the world that with our ingenuity, creativity, and innovative spirit, there are no limits to what is possible in America......

John McCain says the economy is fundamentally sound. John McCain doesn't think that 47 million people without health insurance is a crisis. John McCain wants to privatize Social Security. And in 2008, he still thinks it's okay when women don't earn equal pay for equal work," Clinton said.

With an agenda like that, it makes sense that George Bush and John McCain will be together next week in the Twin Cities. Because these days they're awfully hard to tell apart......

I’m a United States senator because, in 1848, a group of courageous women, and a few brave men, gathered in Seneca Falls, New York, many traveling for days and nights to participate in the first convention on women’s rights in our history. And so dawned a struggle for the right to vote that would last 72 years, handed down by mother to daughter to granddaughter, and a few sons and grandsons along the way.

These women and men looked into their daughters’ eyes and imagined a fairer and freer world and found the strength to fight, to rally, to picket, to endure ridicule and harassment, and brave violence and jail.

And after so many decades, 88 years ago on this very day, the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, became enshrined in our Constitution.

My mother was born before women could vote. My daughter got to vote for her mother for president. This is the story of America, of women and men who defy the odds and never give up.

So how do we give this country back to them? By following the example of a brave New Yorker, a woman who risked her lives to bring slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad.

On that path to freedom, Harriet Tubman had one piece of advice: “If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If there’s shouting after you, keep going. Don’t ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.”

And even in the darkest moments, that is what Americans have done. We have found the faith to keep going.....In America, you always keep going. We’re Americans. We’re not big on quitting."

When Fraser and Vecchio take on a difficult undercover assignment at the
opulent mansion of a Chicago don, they know they'll be in danger of
their lives.  But what about the danger from within?  As Ray's hidden
talent for undercover work becomes obvious, Fraser feels more and more
isolated.  Placed under stress, the delicate balance of their friendship
tilts, and their different temperaments push Ray and Benny towards a
fate they could never have imagined.

b. [info]devildoll shares adorable scans of l'il Superman and l'il Batman.

iii. Nathan Fillion to star as a novelist who helps police FIGHT CRIME in a midseason replacement show on ABC.

... I thought I had something else, but I guess not.

Life: this feels like a lot more than paper cuts

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
our oldest cat Cyrano is ill - he suddenly developed bloody diarrhea. Our vet put him on steroids last week because he had inflammatory bowel disease (he was holding steady but not gaining weight) and now after one week this..... [info]xlorp is taking him to the vet this morning.

The blood etc started while [info]xlorp was at his doctor's yesterday afternoon - so when the vet asked us to bring Cyrano to the hospital I couldn't reach him (plus the vet called 30 min before they closed expecting me to round up a sick cat that I cannot lift and drive to their hospital in rush hour traffic). And while [info]xlorp was getting poked and prodded, I  was cleaning up blood and stuff *and* dealing with a washing machine that overflowed and flooded the garage *and* a cat who kept trying to tell me loudly that something was *very very wrong* but I  couldn't figure out what so I clearly fail as a Pet-Owned Human because I never mastered Meow Speak!  When [info]xlorp finally got home (after being at the doctors for 3 hrs), he found his own personalized gift: his co-worker had left for the evening without completing work, so he had to stay up until 1am.

I've been listening to This Is Ivy League this morning. They make me ridiculously blissful.

Two technical questions:

  1. Should I be concerned that my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop has taken to blinking an orange light at me? It's the one indicating that the laptop is plugged into a power source, and normally it's a steady green.

  2. Why the frell has Word at work decided that I want an arrow () when I hit CTRL+the right arrow key? What I really want is for the cursor to skip over the words to the right. CTRL+left arrow key still skips me back, and it is messing with my mouse-averse typing rhythm! Egads! Forsooth!

It seems to be an ordinary night, with Vecchio and Fraser sitting around
eating pizza and watching TV.  But the pair have just lived through the
trauma of Victoria and gunshot wounds, and something seems to be
bothering Fraser.  When Ray tries to get Benny to talk about it, he
finds out just how much trouble leftover pizza can cause.

Honestly, there is not enough "Oh, Jared" in the WORLD for this. Though if they made a movie where he made out with Marcia Gay Harden, I might actually go see it.

To cleanse your brain, here is the trailer for Appaloosa, starring Ed Harris (see what I did there?) and Viggo Mortensen. Which, first of all, OMG ED HARRIS! *swoon* and Viggo! With weird facial hair! And guns! It looks like it will be remarkably slashy. And it also has Jeremy Irons. And horses.

Jared and Jensen need to do a movie like that.

I was going to do the "progress? what progress?" meme with my wsip, but then I realized I could sum up all my stories in four pithy lines they probably wouldn't live up to, and I got depressed.

Instead, I will talk about how I have been rewatching SPN from the beginning (instead of watching the shows I haven't seen before and am meant to be catching up on *cough*), and yesterday I watched "Devil's Trap"/IMToD and cried like a little baby at various points.

[info]luzdeestrellas and I were trying to list our favorite episodes, and I find it really hard. I mean, I am pretty sure number one for me is "Nightshifter." Though "Salvation"/"Devil's Trap" and "In My Time of Dying" and "What Is and What Should Never Be" do come close. So those, possibly with "Born Under a Bad Sign," "Something Wicked," or maybe "Mystery Spot," would round out my top five.

cut because this got long. also, spoilers through the end of season 3 )

That still leaves out a handful of episodes, which I guess mostly probably rank in that last group - above the bottom but below the half-way mark. I probably like them more while I'm watching them, and they all tend to have at least a handful of good Sam'n'Dean moments, but I don't think I forgot anything I really really like. Hmm...

Just as a preemptive measure, if you feel the need to comment to tell me about how much you disliked Bela, don't.

Everybody's Gotta Have Plans

My weekend was lazy, which was just what I needed. I slept long and hard at night, and napped during the afternoons, lounging on the sofa with Teddy curled up against or on top of me.

Aside from the Olympics, I caught up on Mad Men, Burn Notice, and Long Way Down, but I find myself with little to say about them. Peggy is annoying me for reasons I can't pin down, I adore Michael's mother, and I wish Ewan McGregor would always ride his motorcycle around the world.

Writing hard. *cries*

Rewatching SPN s2 makes me really miss Ellen. And really want to write some seriously porny Dean/Ellen. Possibly once the writing groove returns, I will get on that.

*

Have a poem:

When Are You Not

When are you not a poet and just a woman
the lover asks, honey on his false tongue,
jackhammer to a swollen earth of your breasts
Never, you want to scream Never
not a linguist of the soul daring word
to prayer. & rage. & please, peace. Never
not a maker of the small to serve.
(But not your—kind of mother.)
Never not a chisel to the morning leaf
or the sorrow of the storm. Never not
a gatherer of cries in these hands that
have lost thumbs, but have prayers.
When are you a normal person gathering the fallen
fruit for juice not for the mystery of the tree,
Never—not watching the larvae. The hungry
white fly. Its kiss. Never the thigh not jiggling
at tedium, so eager to leap stones at a stream,
imagine the gazelle.
Never when the sperm is pulsed at the womb, no music.
No colored cry. No muted sax playing God's baritone.
Ask him when was Christ not a carpenter? when He hung
on wood to die? building chairs for thieves to sit on,
to His future right, and to His future left? Ask him,
when are you not a man, and just a woman, love, there
in line at the new Eagle Brand Hardware store, waiting
for its morning doors to open so you two may buy nails,
a ladder, gladioli— newly born.

1. SGA "The Shrine" was adorable.  One of the slashiest episodes ever. "John!" "Rodney!" "John!"

2. New (and old) TV shows are starting up in a few weeks. [info]sol_se has a list here. Here is another list (although please don't spend too much time on what the reviewer says about most of the shows - he/he seems determined to find flaws).  Anyone have any other links to overviews/reviews or new upcoming shows?

New shows I plan on checking out: US remake of "Life On Mars" and "Fringe"
Anyone have other recommendations for new shows to watch?

Returning shows you should watch: Life, Pushing Daisies, Terminator: the Sarah Conner Chronicles, Flight of the Conchords, and Dexter.

3. Speaking of new shows.....A new TV show based on Charlaine Harris' vampire/werewolf romance novels will appear on HBO starting Sept 7 (True Blood). The books are summer reading candy but I am interested if HBO will be able to spice them up.

4.  [info]murielperun has sent me some of her "previously only in fanzines" Due South fiction and I will be putting it online. Stay tuned.

5. Mac vidding for Newbies links here

6. Warren Buffet is participating in live townhall discussions in connection with the new documentary "I.O.U.S.A." - a documentary that is opening this week across the country. It discusses how Americas growing federal debt has the potential to outstrip the latest financial crises and shift our economy even further into a financial meltdown.
